What Is The Detox Diet?

A detox diet is not so much about weight loss but rather about ridding the body of harmful toxins that have built up and could negatively impact general health and well-being – although weight loss can be a positive side effect. It is also a great way to kick start a weight loss plan.

There are many different types of detox diets available that can last anywhere from 24 hours to a couple of weeks. These diets are probably the most restrictive of all types of diet plans and are slightly controversial as there is little scientific evidence to suggest that they actually do work to remove toxins from the body.

Two of the most popular gentle detox diets that continue to receive positive reviews include:

1. Three Day Detox Program

The 3-day detox diet is probably the most relaxed of all the detox programs and consists mainly including nutritious foods that are detoxifying in nature and eliminating those that are toxic.

Foods to eliminate include:

– Processed foods that have been altered and do not appear as they would in nature.
– Foods containing preservatives, artificial colors or flavors or any other man-made ingredients.
– Red meat, chicken and dairy.

It is advisable to go totally organic to avoid GMO (Genetically Modified) foods or those that are produced using pesticides and herbicides that are toxic.

Foods to include:

– Fruits and vegetables, especially those that are high in antioxidants such as berries, beans and green, leafy vegetables.
– Flavor your food with plenty fresh garlic and onions as these are naturally detoxifying foods.
– Snack on raw nuts and healthy whole grains to provide the necessary fiber to aid in good digestive health.

It is essential to drink at least the recommended 8 glasses of water a day and even more to aid your detox. Supplement your liquid intake with detoxifying teas like green tea.

2. Seven Day Detox Plan

It is best to select a week when you can detox free of temptation and where you may be able to take a couple of days off due to the side effects of cleansing like headaches and diarrhea.

Over the next seven days, aim to:

– Start your day with a cleansing lemon and hot water drink.
– Eat raw foods and limit cooking or heating food.
– Exercise for at least one hour a day to help you sweat out toxins.
– Drink at least 3 liters or 10-12 glasses of water a day.
– Scrub and massage your body to improve blood circulation, speed up metabolism and therefore the detox process.
– Avoid foods that contain artificial ingredients, stimulants, are processed or contain high concentrations of sodium. Organic, natural foods are preferable.
